BRUNSWICK’S liveability is a key reason behind its unwanted title of Moreland’s crime capital.

Crime Statistics Agency figures show the suburb endured 3196 crimes, topping the list of burglaries (330), bicycle thefts (181) and drug deals and trafficking (41).

Moreland local area commander Inspector Brian Matthews said the figures were likely a result of Brunswick’s large number of commercial premises and the transport options crooks use to get in and out.

“Brunswick is a big, vibrant, populated suburb,” Insp Matthews said.

“It’s all about mobility and quick transportation.”

Insp Matthews said another worrying aspect behind the figures was the number of people caught carrying weapons such as knives and firearms in Glenroy.

“(It’s concerning) that people are carrying weapons, but positive that we are catching them,” he said.

Coburg recorded Moreland’s second highest total number of crimes, and topped the list of thefts from motor vehicles (579), motor vehicle thefts (225) and drug use and possession offences (124).

Third-placed Glenroy had the most weapons and explosives offences (54) and shared the mantle with Fawkner for the most cultivate and manufacture drugs offences (9).

Fawkner topped the list of arson offences with 15.

Gowanbrae was rated Moreland’s safest suburb, with just 18 burglaries, 28 thefts from motor vehicles and nine drugs offences. The next best were Oak Park (356 total crimes), Hadfield (554) and Pascoe Vale South (580).

The statistics do not include crimes such as assaults, murders and sexual offences.

Insp Matthews said police targeted repeat offenders to try and bring the crime rate down and encouraged the community to report crimes and suspicious activity.

To report a crime, phone Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
